Milano, May 28, 2018 (SPS) - Vice President of the European Parliament Fabio Massimo Castaldo affirmed that the European Parliament will stand against any decision contrary to international legality, which would allow EU countries exploit the resources of Western Sahara, still occupied by Morocco, and called European governments to comply the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) declaring the EU-Morocco fisheries agreement not applicable to the territory of Western Sahara and its adjacent waters.
In a statement on the sidelines of his participation in a conference themed “Western Sahara: From occupation to spoliation of natural resources” held Friday in Milano, in the presence of key figures including militant of the 5 Starts Movement Sara Giampietro, who is in charge of monitoring natural resources in the world and Coordinator of the Observatory for the Protection of Natural Resources in Western Sahara (WSRW) Erik Hagen, Castaldo underlined the importance of “preventing the exploitation of the Sahrawi people’s resources as the Sahrawi territory has not yet been decolonized.”
In this connection, the European Parliament will spare no effort to avoid the promulgation of a decision contrary to the international legality that would allow the EU countries, notably the groups led by France and Spain, to exploit the wealth of a territory under occupation.
“Any decision leading the promulgation of an iniquitous law will not be adopted at the European Parliament,” affirmed the same official.
For his part, the UN's Special Representative for the Western Sahara, Italian Francisco Bastagli stressed in a speech that Morocco had impeded the application of international legality in Western Sahara since the signing of the ceasefire. (SPS)
